After a huge number of hours we have selected a boat. Three SAR members went down to the manufacturers and talked about possible alterations and extras that would make it safe and solid for searchers and subject. We think we have come up with the best!
It is a ThunderJet Maxim Classic. For more information, check out the ThunderJet website: http://www.thunderjet.com/maximclassic/index.html. It will be painted in the color yellow with the canopy blue. We had it extended two feet to 25 ft. We have gone with the HO motor and many other features to make it a solid rescue boat that can handle as many as three stretchers.
We expect it to arrive in mid-October. Hopefully earlier!

Castlegar Society for Search and Rescue is please to announce that they will be The Participating Sponsor for a trade promotion Coupon Book set to be released in the West Kootenay area this August. The Castlegar group will be sharing the proceeds with the groups in Nelson, South Columbia (Fruitvale), Rossland, and Salmo.
“We do so much mutual support work with one another, it only makes sense to share this great opportunity with all Search and Rescue volunteers in the West Kootenays,” states Barb Ihlen, President of Castlegar Society for Search and Rescue. “We receive $1,500 upfront from this promotion through the Treasure Chest. In general, we will receive $3.00 on each coupon book sold in our area.”
Ihlen explains that even though Search and Rescue groups provide services to the RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, and the Coroner’s Office, they receive no funding from any government body – federal, provincial, or municipal. BC search and rescue groups are totally reliant on donations from individuals and organizations to purchase needed equipment and enhance the skills of volunteers.
“Our volunteers are selfless and use their specialized skills to ensure the best possible emergency response to those in need of our services.”
For more information or to make a direct donation to Search and Rescue, please contact Castlegar Society for Search and Rescue @ (250)226-7277 or visit our web site at www.csar.bc.ca.
If you would like to purchase the Coupon Book that features local businesses, please contact 1-866-839-0921.
Members of Castlegar SAR spent Thursday and Friday (May 17-18) in Grand Forks searching for Karen Kyle, who had been reported missing Wednesday morning. Along with members from the Nelson, Creston, Rossland, New Denver, Oliver/Osoyoos, Central Okanagan, and of course Grand Forks Search and Rescue groups, we worked with the RCMP, Civil Air Search and Rescue (CASARA), and the US Border Patrol to comb the area.
She was able to find her way home and spent the past few days in the woods near her home.
